Again Darcy I really like the way you write words.
Mandar's recent thread dovetails with what you were experiencing HJ. (maybe, maybe not.)
And that is dwelling on your experience with a negative entity, or mentally or emotionally reliving the events. Revisiting a bad scene can soon spin out of control, and one thought can be beget another thought and another thought and on and on. And soon you are thinking in circles, going nowhere. It is almost inevitable thoughts can spin out of control and you will be opened up to the influence of a negative entity.
In many ways this is a faulty defense mechanism. We want to think we can control negative thoughts with our own thoughts. And we can, but not in a mental state that looks like a blender. But people will double down , trying to control their own thoughts in the middle of that blender of thought. But that just sends that blender to a higher speed.
This may not be the best analogy but that's all I could think of. I guess the point is just revisiting the matter can cause you to dwell on it. Dwelling on the matter can spin out of control. And then you have a cognitive and emotional vicious cycle that feed energy to a negative entity.
One technique that I have used and seen work for others is to use a ritual. The point of the ritual is to put the matter behind you. It symbolizes that the matter has been thought about and dealt with as best you could. The memory of a ritual should help keep people from dwelling about the event.
A good ritual will engage the senses and the mind and the emotions. ( Think of a full-blown high Mass Catholic funeral, or the alcoholic who seen the light and busts up his bottles against the wall in the alley)
And yes this is easier said than done. The rituals success depends on your intent, not the specific mechanics of the ritual.
My 2 cents. Your mileage may vary.
