There was some sense of medicine and first aid. Kyper tree bark was very excellent at closing up wounds and stopping bleeding and seemed to be a great disinfectant. Though those that are serious enough, they were left to die in Devils Curse. Babies are born where ever they can be, it wasn't uncommon for a woman to give birth in the middle of the street. Those privileged enough, though, would be able to birth their children in a barrack.
There were roughly 10,000 people in Devils Curse, give or take. Close to a million I'd guess in Reprise.
I've never believed in ghosts, spirits, demons, angels, gods, goddesses, etc. I was raised to be skeptical of those claims. There was a creature that made a lot of people believe it to be a ghost though, since nobody's ever been able to see it. From time to time in the wilderness, those that can hear, will hear another set of footsteps behind themselves keeping pace with them, you stop, it stops, you take a step, it steps, you run, it runs, but you stop and turn, it's no longer there. We called them Hidden, but the equal thing here is a Hidebehind. There were claims of people seeing shadows that shouldn't exist and all that, it wasn't until recently I saw my first shadow person.
In regards to spirits in general though, people were religious in my universe, we had Christians, Muslims, Wiccans, etc. The muslims practically shat collective bricks with a sapient critter that call themselves the Jinn though.
My dad taught us how to read and write as well as basic arithmetic.
