About the age of 10-11 I would head for the local swimming pool for the last session on a Saturday afternoon. Sessions were about 40 minutes so we had to time our swimming arriving about 5pm the last session on a Saturday being very quiet and usually just my friends and myself being the only people in the pool.
Now I say swimming My friends could I swim couldn't I just splashed a lot and had fun.
On the way home we'd put the wet towels on our heads held in place with equally wet swimming trunks arab style and hit the local chippie.
A chippie is a chip shop chips being fries in America. Everything is deep fried in those days including pizza wich is a new and novel addition to our cuisine.
So deep fried flaky pastry steak pie (pastry no longer flaky), chips (fries), and a pickled onion we head home and if we were rich had a Mars Bar to finish.
Home in time for Dr Who on the TV, dad would have gone to a different chippie to get the rest of the family fish and chips and I got to eat the skin and batter my sisters didn't like from the fish.
Saturday's were fun
