AP Exclusive: First gene-edited babies claimed in China

HONG KONG (AP) — A Chinese researcher claims that he helped make the world’s first genetically edited babies — twin girls born this month whose DNA he said he altered with a powerful new tool capable of rewriting the very blueprint of life.

If true, it would be a profound leap of science and ethics.

A U.S. scientist said he took part in the work in China, but this kind of gene editing is banned in the United States because the DNA changes can pass to future generations and it risks harming other genes.

Many mainstream scientists think it’s too unsafe to try, and some denounced the Chinese report as human
experimentation.

Gee, just a few months ago they were saying this wouldn't happen because it had been banned by the UN or something. And here we are!

Waiting for those clones they said won't happen to show up next.

The UN doesn’t actually have the authority to ban things. It’s just a forum where they try to make countries agree to signing treaties and whatnot. And treaties don’t have much power unless other countries intend to intervene on violators. But who’s gonna call China out?

Don't forget...these DNA changes can be inherited. Therefore it can begin affecting the gene pool at large over time.

Now I’m really frightened.

I'm almost surprised they told anyone. But now that the box is open, more will come of it. Science only asks if they can do something, not if they should.

We’re not on a good course. The next generation is gonna have a lot to deal with. I hope we don’t live to see the mess.
