'Upside Down Lightning'

Here in California I rarely get any sense of the direction of lightning. There is just a flash in the sky followed by thunder. I rarely see those classic streaking bolts that you always see in movies. But, when I was in Montana on a visit there was a thunderstorm and I did see lots of those bolts that had a definite direction (or seemed to anyway). Most seemed to go down to the ground but some others seemed to go up from lower clouds to higher clouds and some went sideways.

I don't know why but I guess local conditions play a part in the direction and appearance of lightning.
