BREAKING NEWS:
The National Science Foundation announced today that the Arecibo Observatory radar telescope in Puerto Rico cannot be salvaged after it was damaged by broken cables and will be demolished.
This is a sad, sad, day.

Sounds more like they have run out of funding, and repair costs will outstrip their budget.
