Scary Christmas Legends

Krampus

"While American kids never feared a lack of shiny new presents no matter their behavioral tendencies, children of the Old World, especially Germany, knew something worse than a lump of coal was coming their way if they misbehaved. Rather, if you weren't well behaved, you were beaten and tortured before being kidnapped and taken to the Krampus' lair, where we can only assume one was beaten and tortured some more."

My mother's side is all from Germany and I grew up exposed to many German traditions. I was definitely threatened more than once with a lump of coal, but never with beatings and torture. :fearscream: Actually, I had never even heard of Krampus until a few years ago. Belsnickel and the others I didn't know about until today. Germany is very regional in some of its folklore. So that may be why.
