Did you ever hear Father Guido Sarducci's routine on requirements for sainthood? If interested, it starts at about 10:35 on this link, lasts about 2 minutesNada, but there were a lot of people that eventually became Saints that were talked about in my childhood home, the ball field, and church. Padre Pio was a first round All Star.
The modern criteria for sainthood is often medical miracles. from a Catholic perspective both east and west, and Orthodox - is to ask for the prayers of the dead to help those that are living.
If you score 3 medical miracles, you win a sainthood. I listened to an interview with one of the physicians that investigate these claims. Swiss. Not even Catholic. These investigations are very above board. They say 'no' a lot.
Fun fact: I have a rosary blessed by Pope Paul VI. He is probably next in line. And with PP6 sainthood , it will become a relic.
Here is the backstory.
My FBI uncle was working on a case in Italy. Made friends with his counterpart in Italian intelligece services. Got a very small audience with Pope Paul 6. He gave the blessed rosary to his father. Pop ! And then it got filtered down to me.
Some Catholics found Dan Novello's fictional priest character somewhat offensive, but I thought he was brilliant.
