(excerpt from Wikipedia) Kevin David Mitnick (born August 6, 1963) is an American computer security consultant, author and hacker, best known for his high-profile 1995 arrest and later five years in prison for various computer and communications-related crimes.

Mitnick's pursuit, arrest, trial, and sentence along with the associated journalism, books and films were all controversial.

He was arrested in 1995 and released from prison in 2000. Under the plea deal, Mitnick was also prohibited from profiting from films or books based on his criminal activity for seven years, under a special judicial Son of Sam law variation.

He now runs a security firm named Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC that helps test a company's security strengths, weaknesses, and potential loopholes, is the Chief Hacking Officer of security awareness training company KnowBe4 and an active advisory board member at Zimperium, a firm that develops a mobile intrusion prevention system.

Question: How do you feel about someone making a living boosted from a past life of crime ? Served his time, honored his plea agreement, let him make a living ? He should donate all his profits ? Federal Government should hire him to go after international hackers and to review Government sites for security flaws ?

While in jail, any profit made from books or other ventures tied to prior criminal activities should be funnelled to victims or to charities. Once someone's debt to society has been paid, let them earn a living. Better to profit legally at that point than to return to crime.

Many former black hats now work for the government.

I agree that he be al;owed t make a living from his talents. His consulting hopefully taps into his expertise without further damage.

As far as his previous exploits (heh), Mitnick's luck has pretty much run out. Either he went straight, or he would conceivably spend the rest of his natural life in prison (due, in no small part to the astounding technical illiteracy of the legal system... whistling missile launch codes into a payphone my swap partition). He is also at the age where retraining for another career would be infeasible, so why not work with what you know?

Additionally, Mitnick's skills (mostly focused on social engineering, admittedly) are still head and shoulders above those currently in full-time exployment by the US government for enforcing information security protocols and policy.
