Fishermen express fury as Fukushima plant set to release radioactive material into ocean

Fishermen express fury as Fukushima plant set to release radioactive material into ocean

Local residents and environmental groups have condemned a plan to release radioactive tritium from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Officials of Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant, say tritium poses little risk to human health and is quickly diluted by the ocean.

In an interview with local media, Takashi Kawamura, chairman of TEPCO, said: "The decision has already been made." He added, however, that the utility is waiting for approval from the Japanese government before going ahead with the plan and is seeking the understanding of local residents.

The tritium is building up in water that has been used to cool three reactors that suffered fuel melt-downs after cooling equipment was destroyed in the magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that struck north-east Japan in March 2011.

Around 770,000 tons of highly radioactive water is being stored in 580 tanks at the site. Many of the contaminants can be filtered out, but the technology does not presently exist to remove tritium from water.

"This accident happened more than six years ago and the authorities should have been able to devise a way to remove the tritium instead of simply announcing that they are going to dump it into the ocean", said Aileen Mioko-Smith, an anti-nuclear campaigner with Kyoto-based Green Action Japan.

"They say that it will be safe because the ocean is large so it will be diluted, but that sets a precedent that can be copied, essentially permitting anyone to dump nuclear waste into our seas", she told The Telegraph.

Fishermen who operate in waters off the plant say any release of radioactive material will devastate an industry that is still struggling to recover from the initial nuclear disaster.

This is above and beyond what is already LEAKING daily into the ocean from this place. All the radioactive particles remain radioactive, folks. They may spread out a bit, but they don't go away. It only takes one particle in some cases to cause cancer.

This disaster keeps getting worse. The world needs to come together to stop them from doing this.

Most people don't even know it's still going on over there, Lynne. The media won't cover it.

Fukushima Radiation: Days Of Eating Pacific Ocean Fish Are Over, Or Worse… – Disclose.tv

    upload_2017-8-5_10-12-8.jpeg

Radiation has been leaking out of the Fukushima power plant every day since the meltdown. According to Andrew Kishner, the founder of http://www.nuclearcrimes.org who has been keeping extensive track of the happenings following to the Fukushima nuclear meltdown in 2011, has claimed that the news keeps getting worse. He has claimed that TEPCO, the Japanese electricity company in charge of monitoring the plant, has admitted that radioactive material has been leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the defunct power plant for the past six years and that the problem is far from over.

Kishner has claimed that anywhere between 300 to 450 tons of contaminated water have been released into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima Daichi site on a daily basis. It is believed that the water contains traces of radioactive iodine, cesium, and strontium-89 and 90. Despite the best efforts of the Japanese government and the scientific community in the country, fish in the region have most certainly been affected by the output of radiation into the ocean from the power plant. Many of the fish caught in the region have tested positive for huge amounts of radiation resulting in the closure of many fisheries in the region close to the power plant.

Studies have also shown that worryingly high levels of radiation have been found in fish caught on the northwest coast of the United States and in Canada which has been identified as emanating from the power plant. According to Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist who has examined the contaminated fish has claimed that the levels of radiation are not so high as to prove to be poisonous to humans who consume them at this present time. However, he admitted that the situation would have to be closely monitored to ensure that the radiation level does not go too high. However, his claims have been contradicted by other scientists who claim that there is no such thing as a safe level of radiation in food products and that the radioactive contamination may well lead to health problems developing in the future.

This is so horrible it's incomprehensible ! It's a horror film come to life.

I wonder if there is a way to filter the water ?

Mainstream media has completely ignored this. Still leaking radioactive water into ocean. Too busy calling Trump insane to worry about something that matters.

It's a CRIME in Japan to even report on it. I follow this closely and it's actually getting worse over there on the leaking.
