do people know when you unfriend them? and why do they keep giving you a crime roster of people you don't know as potential friends? Is there not a way to make it stop permanently?

Nope, there is not notification if you unfriend. And the crime roster is simply part of the Facebook deal trying to get you to expand. I just ignore it and scroll on past.
