Investigator Advice

This was so very helpful, thank you. Even though this thread is from 2021 I am glad I came across it. I am this person. I am a newbie who is desperate for direction and a group to help guide me in the right direction. I want to understand it fully 100%, and I understand that will take time and experience. Still searching for groups in my area to join and be apart of! You'd think there would be more but no.

I remember running into a paranormal group once, coming out of a store. They had a van (can't remember the name they used) and we chatted a few minutes. There was a pause, and I decided against asking to accompany them at some future time. For some reason I got an ice cold chill down my spine just thinking about this.

Always check and vet the groups you contact. There are good ones and then some really bad ones. Ask to see their mission statement. If they don't have one...move on to another. Find out their methods of investigation as well. As you may see here, our investigators do have different methods. Does not make one wrong or right. Depends a lot on belief systems, imo.

And ask why they investigate. Motive is a big issue here. Ask yourself the same question. Why do you wish to investigate? Are you hoping to find your own answers? To help others? Or is it the "fun" of it? (One of those answers should take you out of the running to be a good investigator, btw.) IMO, you must know yourself and your motives before you dive head first down the rabbit hole of the paranormal.

I think it's a little bit of both. I've always felt different; I am very sensitive to places and I feel a connection to the spirit world. I also want to give people answers, I always want to help. I also have a million questions myself that I would love to have answered. I have no expectations persay, I just want to open myself to the spirit world and see what's around me. What talks back. BUT within reason. Which is why I need some direction as to what to say, how to say it, how to NOT open myself up to any attachments or anything... well really bad.

I don't want to be ignorant about this. I want to take my time and do my research.
Any good literature I can dive head first into?

Never do it alone should be a cardinal rule, as I completely agree as to what others have said. While getting with an experienced group is sound advice, you should also be aware that many "experienced groups", are not what they may claim to be. Do your own checking on a potential group, and see what their approach is, and just what investigations they have done, excluding "pay to investigate" locations. If you are going to investigate an abandoned location, ALWAYS get permission from the owner(s), as most all states have laws against being on private property without consent.

One other bit of caution: Don't fall for the "Certified Ghost Hunter" gimmick! There is no such thing, other than a piece of paper, bestowing the title! I wont name names, but I am aware of at least 2 people that offer such certification.

Thank you for your response. I am currently searching for others in my area who have similar interests if even just to talk with. Finding a group, like I say, has been rather difficult.

You are most welcome! I am always happy to talk about the paranormal if you like.
