Hi everyone- I'm new to the forum and its great to see the support people receive on here!
A few weeks ago I was in my bedroom and heard a loud bang on the window- as if someone had thrown something at it.
When I looked outside, I saw a magpie on the floor outside my house, and once I had got downstairs to investigate, it had died. It appeared as if the magpie had flown into the window at such force that it had died almost straight away.
Coming from a superstitious family I have been told that this is a sign of something bad to come- although nothing has happened as of yet. Can anyone advise me as to whether this may be a sign of bad luck or just coincidence?
Thanks.

Hi JB. Welcome to the ParaNormal Forum. From my perspective, I would just read it as the bird was confused and made the wrong move and leave it at that. I would be sorry that bird had died and not try to read too much into it. Move on. Others may disagree. This is my opinion.

Dear JB437,

Welcome to the forum.

This deadly avian omen is older than the window as a matter of fact. One cannot really pinpoint its origin but birds, being animals that can fly (high) in the air, have always been associated with the spirit realm thus being privy to spiritual knowledge. In the past, it was seen as a bad omen if a bird simply appeared at the window or flew into the house which was occupied by someone seriously ill. Of course, concerned family members will tend to take note of anything uncommon occuring in the household and possibly give it a special meaning, especially if their family member dies shortly after. One would never know if the sick person would have died regardless of the bird appearing or not though.

I have observed various bird species fly against windows at work and at various homes over the years. Some birds survived, some didn't. It would be very hard to see a correlation between a bird flying into a window and a person of the household or even the witness of the event dying shortly after. Statistically speaking, one would expect the odd death at a household where a bird had flown against the window and died without appealing to the supernatural. In the majority of cases, the only fatality will be that of the bird.

It is estimated that around 1 billion birds die in America alone each year due to collisions with buildings. Unlike people, birds cannot recognize the windows due to the reflection and will sometimes fly into them at full speed regardless of the danger. There are precautions one can take to minimize the risk of that happening like applying various tapes and stickers to the window. It is the least we can do for our feathery friends...

Have a great day and lots of fun in the forum.

I would have to agree with 7 on this one, does the window reflect any trees or bushes outside?? was it in the evening or morning when the sun catches it at a certain angle and reflects the sky or anything that would confuse the bird in any way?... I once worked in a building that every spring would have probably a dozen birds fly into the front office windows and quite often would be tragic for them....they finally tinted the windows to help stop it...so given the time of year and such I wouldn't put too much into it,

not really well maybe um, I am not sure really I have issues with crows. I do remember birds flying into my windshield a number of times on the road and I have always had car problems.
If this is the only time it happened don't worry about it. I remember we had parakeets and in our living room we had a half wall mirrored and those birds would fly directly into it cracking their heads on the mirror well not really cracking them but they would get dazed. Like Critter said the reflection of trees would cause that.

I agree with 7Christie. It is not uncommon for birds to fly into Windows.

Hi JB sorry took so long trying to go threw everything lmao.
I believe in the paranormal but to be honest I think the bird flew into the window. We have had that alot happen birds in Arizona.

J.B I want you to try this.
Birds all over the world do it if you keep your windows very clean the birds see the reflection of the outside think the is ok.Put things on your window or hang something shiny from your windows. If they don't see the reflection I.e the sky ect they won't fly into the window.

Birds crash into windows, it's true and some helpful information and advice has been posted, but I'm not sure that answers the question. In my view, anything, no matter how strange, must operate within the laws of physics somehow, so saying that a thing is possible, doesn't preclude a paranormal element! Birds crash into windows, but is it an omen of bad luck if a magpie does so and then dies? It doesn't matter that it's possible for a magpie to crash into a window or why the magpie did it very much.* The question is whether the event has a deeper significance. That I don't know off-hand. If it seems significant to you, then perhaps it is. Unless somebody comes up with something which says otherwise, I'd say to think it over in a loose sort of way and see if you find any meaning yourself. After all, if it was an omen meant for you, then you should be best placed to figure it out. The rest of us can only provide inspiration.

*Except to the magpie and the magpie's friends

I found this:
"in Scotland a single magpie seen near the window of a house is a sign of impending death"
In your case though this came true very quickly, as the magpie immediately died from crashing into the window, so I wouldn't worry about that, as it was a self fulfilling prophesy. A superstition vindicated, but also proven useless!
