I would like to preface what I am about to say by first explaining that, as far as I know, I had not heard of Shadowmen before two years ago.

It was in 2014, in the summer time, I was suffering from an allergy attack which lasted into the early morning hours. At some time past midnight, I went downstairs and got a glass of iced herbal tea, flicking on the lights in the rooms on the way to the kitchen. I stopped for a moment in the kitchen to clear up things and put away a few dishes, then turned off the kitchen light and walked back the way I had come, switching off lights again as I went. When I reached the staircase to the upstairs, I set the glass down on a hall table, and in doing so, happened to glance back at the darkened kitchen and saw what appeared to be a blacker shadow in the blackness beside the refrigerator. I didn't think much of it and was about to turn away, when suddenly, it moved. The outline of a large man in a long raincoat and hat, with his head bent so that his face could not be seen, was just visible and growing darker and more detailed by the minute. In fact, his entire figure was bent as if he was laboring under a heavy burden. Just as I registered these details, I realized with growing dread that this ' uninvited guest' was moving with a horrible shuffling and lurching gait toward me.

Forgetting all about the glass of tea, I flew up the stairs and into the bedroom and pulled the bedspread over my head, feeling like a ridiculous ostrich since hiding under the bedspread is not much of a defense against an intruder. It was then that a strange voice -- the voice of a woman -- spoke in the darkness saying, 'Don't be afraid. He is too broken to hurt you now.'

And then, I awoke. I was alone in the house, and the house was silent.

Apparently, it had been only a dream. Since I had been experiencing similar dreams for years, I began reading about ghosts and paranormal encounters and came across various stories about the Shadowman or Hatman.

And the iced tea, was it downstairs or part of a dream ?

The tea was part of the dream. I just realized I posted this in the wrong place! I re-posted under the forums. Thanks for the response!

Ok, thanks. I am still getting acquainted with the site and didn't know how to remove this from the live chat portal.

Yeah, maybe a dream.. Well we like to think it's a dream because our minds automatically go into common sense mode "As we will see, virtually every major scientific account of emotion incorporates our intuitions about dual-processing modes in the mind, and specifically our commonsense distinction between automatic elicitation and controlled regulation of emotion. Two Major Scientific Approaches to Emotion Dual-process models" (Sorry had to get the facts on that) Anyway we pass things off as just a dream or another excuse at time to maintain our sanity. Who do we have in our lives that we can tell these things to? I would like to say welcome to the Forum CBC. We are here for you and we all have our own experiences.

Dream or not, This dream definitely has merit here. Welcome to the forum!

This is a first though. Even the shadow man in our dreams acts untouchable and virtually nothing stops them but positivity and lack of fear. I’m surprised a voice you heard referred to the being as broken to say the least.

Thanks for sharing!

Right on! (and thanks for the welcome) There is no one to tell these experiences to who will believe. I have tried for more than twenty years.

If people want to dismiss it as another piece of fiction, I am finally and at last just beginning to be willing to accept strange 'coincidental' experiences as figments of my imagination and forget about the so-called paranormal.

Thanks for the welcome! You are a keen observer and went directly to the point of my story. The very thing that has worried me about this dream is the message from the woman's voice saying that the Shadowman is broken and that he can't hurt me now -- unlike the living who can. The implication seems to be that he was someone who had harmed me when he was alive, but I can't think of anyone who fits that description.
