NASA's Hubble Space Telescope unexpectedly captured the breakup of comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4) as it shattered into as many as 30 fragments, some the size of a house. The comet's icy nucleus was originally the size of one or two football fields. The images were captured while the comet was approximately 91 million miles from Earth. The surprising cosmic event means the comet likely won't be visible to the naked eye when it passes by the planet next month.
