AI girlfriends are ruining an entire generation of men

The rise of virtual artificial intelligence (AI) girlfriends is enabling the silent epidemic of loneliness in an entire generation of young men. It is also having severe consequences for America’s future.

How is something that seems so ridiculous — a virtual AI girlfriend — causing a future crisis among Americans? Well, with millions of users, apps have created virtual girlfriends that talk to you, love you, allow you to live out your erotic fantasies, and learn, through data, exactly what you like and what you don’t like, creating the “perfect” relationship.

These virtual girlfriends can even be based on real people. One influencer created an AI bot of herself named Caryn, then gained over 1,000 users (i.e. real boyfriends) in less than a week and a waitlist of more than 15,000 people.

An AI girlfriend might sound enticing. You get to connect with a super hot girl who listens to you and appreciates you, 24/7. Beyond choosing physical attributes, down to the size of her rear end, you can pick her personality. You prefer “hot, funny, and bold”? That’s what she will be. Or if “cute, shy, and modest” is more your cup of tea, she’s got you covered.

Reading this I am reminded of The Muppet Movie. In that film there is a scene where Kermit the Frog and Rolf the Dog are singing a duet about women, the refrain of this musical piece is "I hope that something better comes along". I'm sure at that time it was meant as a joke about how there is no other option, the old "Can't live with 'em, Can't live without 'em" bit (which was also a line in the Muppet song). Today we now have the technology to create that "something better". Something that fulfills a man's emotional needs, even if it's not "real".

Everyone has needs, physical needs, spiritual needs, social needs and emotional needs. What we are seeing in this story is an articulation of the emotional needs for these men, and probably most men in general. The need to be heard and appreciated. Years ago I saw piece where a journalist was interviewing women who worked as escorts for high-end clients, guys like stock brokers, business owners and political connected guys who held unelected positions. One of the things that really stood out was how many of these women said these guys weren't interested in getting their physical needs met but rather their emotional needs. Every one of these women had clients who just wanted to talk about the things going on in their lives. Some women started reading up on psychology and emotional therapy to better serve these clients. So I don't think this is really an issue of AI being a problem, but rather AI is being used to try and solve a problem that has been there this whole time.

Excellent observation, Stevedog.

The other thing I see happening is people are much more "me" centered than in the past. It used to be two people learned to share, give to each other, and want the best for the other person and to work at becoming a "whole" relationship. What I see now, and this is strictly my opinion, is more and more people aren't willing to share of themselves or to sacrifice a bit for others. They miss the "joy" that can happen when you have decided to not purchase the "thing" you want for yourself in order to give something to another. Or the "sharing" in general. The "me first" attitude is becoming more and more prevalent in society overall. AI is just another step in the self-focus attitude of many people these days.

Good points, Debi and Stevedog! We are indeed in the middle of a "me" crisis. Just take a walk down the street and nearly every person you see has their head bent over a smartphone and are not involved with their surroundings; not greeting others, not noticing the weather, taking selfies, etc.

It could be better than being lonely and fulfill some needs in some people. Just an advanced sex toy really. Not in any way spiritual to me and that's the main requirement as we get older, and more fussy, lol.

I am not worried about AI replacing women.
I think the world needs a little less whining and more getting on with life.
AI (and robots) will replace a lot of people in various ways. Within the next twenty years we’ll see a huge percentage of human workers being displaced by AI employees that don’t complain, desire wages, and can work 24/7.

I’m not even sure that unions can continue to protect their members. The corporate world is all about the almighty dollar.

Oh no doubt AI has a place in a factory but I don’t think most men will prefer a computer screen to a real woman. There are always those that will lol.
