Did you ever find out what happened to the other pets in the house ?

I did. They ended up adopted out by a friend who is a vet. There was a very long history of hoarding animals there and neglect. At one time she had over 8 dogs on short chains in the yard. Bad thing. Once we got involved we stopped that.

I can't understand why people hoard animals.

Honestly, the woman in question was a hoarder. She saw herself as "protecting" them. It's also an ownership and power thing on a mental level.
