What Caused Betelgeuse to Dim?

I watched this happen. I know the sky very well, and when Betelgeuse dimmed, it was disturbing. Unchanging over a lifetime and suddenly noticeably dimmer, the astronomical community was abuzz. The dust cloud theory has been a leading contender for a while, along with a large, persistent star spot (sun spot).
A future generation will see quite a show when it goes supernova.
