It's based on the TV show Firefly.

Serenity is a fictional spacecraft that appears in Joss Whedon's Firefly television series and related works. Set in the 26th century, the series follows the nine-person crew of the Firefly-class vessel, a small transport ship, as they earn a living through various legal and illegal means.

It was a TV series called Firefly. Supposedly the creators had a grand overarching story concept spanning 4 seasons, however the show was canceled after the first season. Many fans blame the TV studio who aired the episodes out of order so the overall story line of the series didn't make any sense. Fans sent mail trying to get the show un-canceled but instead the studio green lit a single movie called Serenity that was basically a condensed version of what the rest of the series was going be.
