Hawking has gone back and forth on the subject for a while.

I think the best way to say it is that while he thought it's worth it to look for extraterrestrial life, it may not be a good idea to broadcast our own presence.

Not sure if he feels that way still, but that's how I always understood his position for the most part.

By the way, I'm sure I don't really need to say this, but the astronomy world is pretty much all on the same page when it comes to extraterrestrial life. The overwhelming concensus is that there is alien life out there - with individual civilizations likely numbering in the thousands or more. Of course as to whether or not they have been in contact with Earth is another story.
