Something dawned on me. Notice the name: Mothmen. Men. Not women. This is a clue to what they really are.
The Mothmen are senior high school students and college students from another reality. They put on the costumes and have a higher level of science then we do so they can fly without anything easily apparent. They come to this reality to scare people and prank them. They are guys wanted to show off in an immature fashion. They fly with the cars, wait in places to be seen, carry on like this and then go back to their reality, get together in a group of guys and have a good laugh at the humans.
Seems like a possible concept to me.
