First, let me state that I do not condone street racing, but the following tale is from decades ago and experienced by a younger version of myself who used to take the typical chances of stupid youth.
It's 1979, late one Saturday night in Salt Lake City. I was driving my 1979 Mazda RX-7 home after an evening with friends, the streets were fairly deserted. I pulled up to a red light in the right lane, it was in the university district. A moment later, a 1969 Camaro pulls up next to me and begins revving his engine. Now, while the RX-7 was a fast sports car, it was pretty slow off the line and a V8 Camaro would just smoke it in the 1/4 mile. I decide that discretion is the better part of valor and make up my mind to turn right when the light changed, letting him charge ahead. I turned my head to look at the other driver to my left, and was shocked. What I saw driving that car had the face of a demon, wild, red and blond hair, glowing yellow eyes, fangs sticking out of a tightly-drawn grimacing mouth. He was revving his engine and staring at me. The light changed, the Camaro squirted off the line. I turned right and sped away. I took a very circuitous route home, making sure I wasn't being followed. It was very tough getting to sleep that night.
I never forgot that, to this day I call the driver "The Camaro Demon".
Was it in fact a demon, or just someone in fancy makeup?
The glowing yellow eyes tell me it was something supernatural, though there were probably ways to do that even in 1979 (I used to practically live at Radio Shack, lol). But my gut also told me that it wasn't of this world. I made a drawing of what I saw the next day (I used to be an artist, drawing cartoons for network TV in those days. I have a couple of listings on the iMDB). Somewhere I still have that sketch and will try to find it. If I do, I will scan and post it.
Not really amusing, except to my friends who laughed when I told them about it, and were convinced I had been smoking something... (I hadn't)
