This high school refuses to allow a dance with the theme "American Pride." Ohhhh, noooooo! Someone might become offended by the term America! No, we shall call it the "National Pride" dance.
Looks like the kids get their "American Pride" dance after all! Read what the principal said...and HOW she said it:
We’re supporting that student decision,” the principal told me.
Notice how she phrased that – the “student” decision?
“We’re going forward with supporting their theme of American Pride,” she added.
Again, notice the emphasis on “their” theme? It’s not the school’s theme. It’s thestudents’ theme. Heaven forbid the administrators be caught trying to promote American patriotism.
Kudos to the administrators. I fail to see why an American Pride themed dance would be controversial when being held at an American high school. Of course my generation was raised to love and have pride in the country, and increasingly kids are being taught that national pride is a bad thing. At least for people born in America. You can move here from another country and show all the pride you want for the land you left behind and that's perfectly okay.
