I think that as soon as the early hominids stepped up and walked they started wearing ornamentation. I'm talking pre-homo-sapien hominids. I have seen chimps wearing hats and they were very possessive of them.
I suspect that the first things that people added to their ornamentation would have been things related to the sun, moon, and stars. The night sky was their television. They peopled it with the constellations and their gods live there. They knew the night sky in a way that only astronomers might know it today.
