The Old dark House, 72 minutes
I never tire of watching this movie, one of James Whale's best, IMO. It's a perfectly cast tour de force of ensemble acting that includes Ernest Thesiger and Boris Karloff, three years before Whale gave them starring roles in Bride of Frankenstein. Melvyn Douglas is perfect as the cynical war veteran who falls in love with beautiful Lillian Bond, girlfriend of Sir William Porterhouse (played to the hilt by Charles Laughton). A young Raymond Massey makes a terrific and very handsome "straight man," and Gloria Stuart as his wife is absolutely luscious. For all that, my favorite character is Rebecca Femm as played by Eva Moore. She's an absolute delight to watch and gets all the best laughs.
