Most think it was a large cat of some kind. The vampiristic element leant itself to conjecture about a cryptid. Many of the accounts seem contradictory. I think the Big cat hypothesis bears some weight, but I feel like something was using a natural predators actions as a smoke screen.

I thought feline paws were wider / shorter and more "padded"

Yeah my thoughts too. the track looks more canine to me. the claws are showing and most cats with the exception of Cheetahs have retractable claws

I think it has more or less come and gone, I was just intrigued by a story like that so close to home.

I think some big wolf/coyote, but they aren't "clean" eaters.
