In a somewhat chilling turn of events, YouTube has announced plans to feature information from Wikipedia alongside videos about conspiracy theories in an effort to debunk them.

The initiative, announced by the company's CEO Susan Wojcicki at the SXSW festival this week, will begin in a few months.

According to Wojcicki, the company will initially target 'major' conspiracies such as the infamous Moon Hoax theory.

The move comes in response to considerable criticism aimed at YouTube over the plethora of conspiracy-related videos which repeatedly appear in the wake of mass shooting incidents.

How dismantling the Moon Hoax theory helps in that regard is anyone's guess.

As one can imagine, the plan has been met with consternation from conspiracy theorists, of all stripes, who wonder what this might mean for their respective alternative research communities, whether it be Flat Earth fandom or UFO disclosure advocates.

Indeed, were the company not so open about their intentions, one might even call it a conspiracy to silence dissenting opinions that are seen as distasteful to the mainstream.

Whether it will prove to be successful is another matter altogether as some experts are skeptical that the site has the logistics in place to quickly respond to videos about breaking news with well-prepared Wikipedia rebuttals.

To that end, in a testament to the ill-conceived nature of the plan, the encyclopedic website issued a statement indicating that they are not partnering with YouTube on the project, per se, and that the video site is simply going to take their information and use it on their own.

As such, some have raised concerns about how the concept will impact the crowd-sourced nature of Wikipedia which already has a reputation for not always having accurate information in the first place and may now be subjected to virtual 'wars' between skeptics and believers.

Ultimately, should a working system be developed, it is almost certainly not going to stop the creation of conspiracy videos, which will likely just wind up being posted on sites other than YouTube.

Nonetheless, the concept is rather worrisome, regardless of where one stands on specific conspiracy theories, including the more loathsome of the lot, as it puts the power to police information into the hands of YouTube and, by extension, Wikipedia rather than individual users.

So we can have flat earth people running their bloody mouths and showing up on your feed because the algorithms didn’t stop them, but God forbid you talk conspiracy theories, religion, weapons or something that offends people. Wikipedia is gonna tell you all the ways you’re wrong

That appears to be the plan. OMG...the censorship abounds under the name of "truth". And now it's Wiki-truth!

Perfect example of how well wiki does...Clyde Lewis's pic on wiki is one of a black man in a suit. Clyde is a white guy who wears a lot of black. He's tried to get them to change that forever and they won't.

How dare you defy the truth of our new internet overlord!

Jk one time when I was doing a project where I had to talk about Nintendo, some troll edited a bunch of words and turned sales and popularity into one huge innuendo essay. I almost included a little because I was already so sleep deprived putting the project together.

First half asleep thoughts. I... actually support this! If they were just taking the videos down then no, that would be terrible, but featuring opposing information is a good thing. As it stands the algorithms designed to suggest useful results on Youtube and Google create an echo chamber effect where people only see sites and videos that agree with their own existing view and the more you watch the stronger the bias gets. This is correcting a bias in the system rather than creating one, IMO.

Many conspiracy articles and vids make bald statements that 'X' is a proven fact or that 'Y' has never been proven and while sometimes it's true sometimes it isn't and checking every single statement is time consuming and it's not surprising that most don't bother. Having the claimed facts that put the lie to the more obvious false claims right there is no bad thing.

Also, you can lead a horse to Wikipedia but you can't make it enjoy morris dancing! People will still think what they want. Any worthwhile theory should be able to stand up to some lazily sourced info from Wikipedia that isn't even directed at the video specifically. If your video is so easily debunked then it's probably a waste of time in any case! It'll weed out the time wasters and focus on the actual good theories that can't so easily be dismissed.

Obviously Wikipedia isn't actually the font of all knowledge. It would be better to display information sourced from pages by CSICOP or Skeptoid or some other dedicated researchers rather than a Wiki, but this hasn't even started up yet, hopefully they'll tweak things.

Well yeah. I mean after the pie thread on here I was going to link to the Wikipedia article about British meaning of the word 'pie' and the different types of pie and culture of pies, but..... it seems to have been written by a Martian who once heard about Britain from a Venusian.

Agreed that a better source of info should be used, but it should be more hit than miss and ultimately it's up to people to decide for themselves.

I am totally OPPOSED to this. This is nothing more than politically correct THOUGHT police. It will only be the beginning of the end for expressing freely ones beliefs.

Soon it will be religion-Catholics, Mormons, Jewish etc... be barred from expressing their beliefs. Can't prove GOD exists so you Can't discuss it.

Then the believer in Paranormal will be next... so DANGEROUS!!
