Tipping

We're good tippers, but I have on a few occasions over the years left small tips (never no tip) to show dissatisfaction with servers. I make a point of telling them why I left the small tip, and will also tell a manager (if available) why as well. The first thing I reminded them of is "tip" is an acronym for "too insure promptness."

Our daughter worked her way through grad school as a hostess at a very upscale restaurant. Some of her stories about tips, both high and low/none, are amazing. The saddest one was a waitress who worked taking care of a very demanding party of nearly thirty for an entire evening. The total bill, including a lot of top shelf liquor, came to over $3000. They left her $20. She literally dropped to her knees sobbing.

When I was single and drank on a regular basis. I tipped my bartenders 50% minimum! Everytime I walked through the doors my berr and shot would be ready and no matter how busy it was I never waited for my next round...lol!

I, for one, am now totally confused as to who you tip and how much! Do you tip the Walmart delivery driver? How much for a meal delivery driver? I don't happen to use these services, but what is the expected amount of tipping these days and who are you supposed to tip for all these new "services" out there???

we are good tippers. my wife worked in the service industry for a long time as we moved from place to place, state to state. we know how hard those jobs can be as far as pay is concerned. and a good waiter/waitress or other service industry worker deserves it.

My head is telling me bad thunderstorms are coming! I checked the weather and thunderstorms are predicted for pretty much the next 2 weeks! Now im sure that will change.

So in general a 15-20% tip is the standard for most any service. I dont know math so I tip 50%. So my average bar bill was about 300 bucks. So the bartender or waitress gets a 150 dollar tip. I know what restaurant and bar staff get paid and I also know how hard the job can be. So I have no problem paying for good service.

What does annoy me is when I go pick up a pizza and I tap my card and it asks if I want too tip! Why? Yet I still tip.

What are your thoughts on tipping? Have you ever stiffed a server because of poor service or being unprofessional? Have you ever worked in a job where you relied on tips?
I always tip, unless the service is extremely poor. There were a few times when I didn't leave a tip at all, but it was justifiable. I feel good when I leave a tip and always try to leave an amount that makes sense. I once had a food delivery person actually demand a tip, rudely. I let the silence grow, then asked pointedly, "How much do you want?" She looked embarrassed and mumbled something. I tipped her anyway.

I used to work in a job where I relied on tips. My mother was very ill and I was the sole breadwinner for her and three younger siblings. Those tips really made a difference! I think that it is plain mean spirited not to leave a tip.
