Pretty sure that's low angle sun reflecting off a short contrail. The comment about it moving "smoothly and steadily" certainly indicates an aircraft. The aircraft flying south to north would put the setting sun perpendicular to it flight path, providing perfect illumination of the contrail. The first image (upper left) shows a similar image, but taken at a slightly different angle relative to the aircraft.
