The History of Death Masks

One of our criminal bushrangers over here "Mad Dog Morgan"had his head removed and skinned and a mask made from this. His body was treated with the same disrespect he had given others. It was rumoured here they made a money pouch out of his man bits.Makes you think the authorities weren't any better than the criminals.Strangely ,bushrangers are generally idolized by the general public here, even modern day murderers such as Chopper Reid.Strange place, lol.

Lord Pakal of Palenque had a jade death mask.

What is a bushranger?

Good article Duke. I didn’t realize how common the practice was. I guess before photography it was a way to save the likeness.

Ned Kelly is probably the most famous one here. They were outlaw criminals in the colonial days that lived out bush and were anti police, sort of like Robin Hood and stole from the rich landholders and supposedly gave to the poor.In truth they were mainly horse thieves and cop killers. They all had a sob story about how badly they were treated and became hero's in their day and up to now.Australia has a fascination with these people and their rebellious ways.Strange country, lol.
