A temple and stone skull carvings dedicated to Aztec deity Xipe Tótec has been found by archaeologists excavating in Mexico. The pre-Hispanic fertility god is depicted as a skinned human corpse. The temple of the 'Flayed Lord' dates to between A.D. 1000 and 1260, when unfortunate individuals were sacrificed and skinned by priests who would then don the skin of their victims. After the gruesome ritual the skins were placed in small pits at the foot of the altar and sealed with the recently discovered carvings.
