Scared Stiff in Savannah

I love it!

I strongly believe when we moved I was bored. I didn't like the fact that it was so small, I didn't like going to the bank or Kroger without seeing someone I knew. I also disliked the lack of concerts and events. I think I was a bit spoiled. I've matured much since then and am now trying to convince my husband to move us BACK. He is hesitant as he has a decent job here. I cannot wait to go back, such a beautiful city. Just wow.

Did you live in town or on the south side?
i lived on the southside. now i stay all over when visiting, depending on what i have planned. concerts and events?..c'mon now, savannah is one big event itself, everyday.....a place where you really do feel that we are all just actors and the world but a stage....(it is an enchanted, beautiful city)............ honestly though, there is a lot to do and see, a lot of history there. and St. Simons or Jekyll island are always close by when the beach calls......tybee pier is cool to hang out on too... but the other islands offer quite a bit more...

Just like many on this site, sounds like you are sensitive to these things. Not only are buildings and areas prone to activity, people are too. We are beacons that can attract these things to us.

I start by looking at real estate/property tax records for the address to determine when it was built and previous owners. You can also file a FOIA request to the police and fire departments responsible for the area to determine if any they responded to emergency calls at the address.
I have hit a dead end as I've tried to research the house to no avail. Even zillow says the property tax information isn't public. So when I went to the site to search for it, nothing comes back. How can that be? Like I said, I'm also not very good at finding that kind of information, but I am frustrated as I'm sure if I knew the origin of the house I might possibly get some answers.

So true. My life has been very quiet and as a stay at home mom, I am in my house a lot. Grateful I feel so comfortable in it, but it's very quiet here lol.

Wanting to explore the history of the town I am currently living in so I can find historical buildings and land marks and then begin possibly exploring them for activity..

Law must be different in FL, tax records are public domain here through the country auditor's office. I think you said you have friends who are realtors. Ask them to do a MLS search for the address. That will at least tell you how many times/how often the home has been on the market/sold and when it was first placed on the market.

The FOIA requests to police/fire departments is most likely to determine if there's anything negative relative to the property address. Calls for murder, spousal/child abuse, domestic disputes, alcohol/drug abuse, etc. would be a strong indicator things are/have not been good there.

There's always talking to neighbors who've lived near the property for a long time as well.

Another route might to contact a local paranormal group and asked to be put in touch to their researcher. They would be more in turn with local/state law and could offer suggestions on what's available where.

The house was in Savannah, GA. I tried searching again with my husband and again we couldn't find anything. When I asked him why, all he said was "it's just a random house." And I thought "all the more reason to be able to have access to its history!" ha.

All he found was it was built in 1900.

you can try the digital library of georgia, (part of the UGA system.) they have maps of the savannah city and area from the late 1800's to i think the 1960's, sometimes you can find the original buildings and the original owners names.....then you can trace the sales, uses, etc..... to present times..... could be very time consuming and tedious but it is maybe a possibility of finding and learning about the property and what it was through the years.

That's the most important thing about where any of us live. You have to be comfortable. Good luck in researching the resident history of your home.

Thanks, Mo, for telling us your experience. You saw the cowboy first in the dorm and then in the house rental, right? So, this spirit must have followed you or maybe he is your guide. You mentioned he tipped his hat to you before walking out. I find this a friendly gesture. This may be helpful.
