This is another historical UFO story where details, at least as long reported, cast doubt on its authenticity. Baptist ministers do not give "last rites," and the service allegedly said by the pastor for the craft's occupants are contrary to Baptist theology.
The church in question still exists, and they are routinely contacted by people researching the story. I called them probably twenty years ago, they were polite but wouldn't discuss the story.
I thought you had to ask for last rites. If they are dead how are they going to ask? Maybe they were not Christians? I doubted theis story too but its still around so maybe there is something behind it that is true.
