My wife and I are both late-life divorcees, we came out of our prior relationships pretty much broke. But we had a path and enough time to still save for a decent retirement. It required both of us working.
Then she started getting sick just a couple of years into our marriage, by the time we'd been married 5 years she could no longer work, was having nausea that lasted up to 12 hours a day (still has this though not as severe). 4 years ago she suffered a concussion in an auto accident, then in October she had a stroke. So our plans didn't happen and I've been doing everything I can for the past half decade just keeping us afloat, hemorrhaging up to $1500/mo. for years. I had to spend all the retirement money keeping her alive since insurance covered nowhere near enough. After almost 2 years, her Social Security disability case was finally granted (COVID doubled the standard review times) last month so we should see some relief in coming months. She should get Medicare as well, which will help tremendously.
But the retirement money is already gone and I'm still 2 years from qualifying for Medicare, myself, so continue to go to the day job every day, for as long as they'll let me keep showing up.
