Finding ET: do aliens even use radio signals ?

We are presuming a lot when we expect to receive signals that we can comprehend from space. It could be that they were transmitted when we were still in the dark ages, and we have only been listening for a relatively short time. That is if they even want to. There is a school of thought that it if you were intelligent enough to know there are other more advanced civilisations out there then you would want to keep quiet about it.
They also may not need to. Consider if a planet is inhabited by horseshoe crabs who have not changed on this planet for 445 million years. Do they need to evolve to contact other crabs on other planets or are they just happy doing what they have always done?
