Rather not say
Early this year my wife and I traveled to VA. to attend my uncles funeral. On our last day there we toured Washington DC and I wanted to see the exorcist house and stairs. We walked the stairs (the film doesn't do it justice the damn thing is steep and a pain to walk up) and took pictures in front of the house. After getting home I looked at the pictures and what the house looked like in the film and realized that an entire section of the house was missing (the room/wing where the exorcism took place/filmed was gone). My question is was the house remodeled since the filming or was that wing of the house just a set that was built onto the house for the movie?

An excellent question to which I don't have an answer. I'll have to dig a bit on that one.

"The Exorcist" House and Stairs | IAMNOTASTALKER
Excerpt:
Looking below, you may notice that the actual residence differs quite a bit from what appeared onscreen. For the shoot, an entire fake wing was built on the eastern side of the house. This was done so that Regan’s bedroom window would be close to the stairs situated next to the property, which accommodated for several scenes that were pertinent to the film (I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I won’t say more). A fake mansard roof was also added to the structure to give the appearance that the home had an attic – something else that was necessary to the plotline.

Thank you, very interesting.

Wasn't the interior of the house built on set? Apparently it all burnt down (the set) apart from Regan's room.

Scariest movie I have ever seen. Still scares me to this day.

I first watched it a age 17. It was at a friends house. She and her parents even managed to
laugh at bits of the film. I sat there horrified. I remember being too scared to go to the loo. It scarred me for life, lol.

I cannot even stand seeing pictures of Linda Blair from the film.

Hahaha Actually I know the logic on scary movie dates. Women typically grab on to someone to protect them when scared. Your husband is very smart! Lol

Funny story about this movie. When this came out on video I was just a small boy and liked to take things apart. I had unscrewed a light bulb from a lamp and put a dime inside the light socket, then screwed the bulb back in. My Dad was watching The Exorcist in the living room by himself (my father is terrified of these types of movies btw) when someone turned on the light switch, which in turn burned out a fuse and the power went out right in the middle of the scene where Linda Blair’s head was turned all the way around. He said the house turned pitch dark and he heard the refrigerator motor slowly wind down. He instantly panicked and told god he was sorry for watching and would never watch again! Lol It took him hours to find out what was going on with the fuses that kept burning out. Let’s just say he was not happy when he figured out I had stuck a dime in the light socket!
:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Oh, gosh, Fizzgig! That's hilarious! And awful! :D Your poor father!

It's pretty common to build new sets rather than try to film on original locations for real-life film. It used to really bother me, especially in historic films where they'd get all the details just wrong enough to notice. Now, having worked with a film crew on location, I can see why they use custom built sets instead of actual locations. I can't imagine actually trying to film in the Blair house with a full film crew!
