A passed on person that I knew recently died in a house fire and now, this morning, for the first time ever, I began smelling a burning, metallic smell. However, when I smelled it, I went into my mother's room and said, "mom, do you smell that?!" She responded with, "smell what?" I answered, "burning, I can smell a burning, metallic smell." She said she smelled nothing and then a minute later, the smell was gone.

Could I have smelled that because it was the passed on person that I knew visiting me? Because I have never, ever smelled burning metallic before and my mom and I have been living in our place for years and I looked up online and found out that when someone burns in fire, their burning flesh smells like -- burning and it also smells metallic. So could I have been visited by the passed on person that I knew? And if so, did the smell vanish within a minute later because I scared away or chased away the passed on person away? And if so, will the passed on person eventually come back or did they get scared or chased away permanently and will never return?

Hello, Lithiumflower, and welcome to PNF. Your question would be difficult to answer because it seems to have been a one off experience. The person who passed may have been with you briefly, but if it doesn't happen again, it is hard to say! Could the smell have come into your place from outdoors?

I am sure other members will weigh in, I am limited in my answers presently.

Hi, thank you for responding, no because all my windows were closed at the time, earlier about a week or two ago, my mother smelled the same thing late one night and saw a person in black sitting on the end of her bed at the same time, and we both believed it was the same passed on person, because earlier that night, both she and I had been talking at length about that person, about good times we've experienced with that person.

Hi Lf and welcome to the PNF. First and foremost, I think your primary concern should be whether you have an electrical wiring or similar issue that could be a fire risk. You mentioned you'd lived there for years, and older wiring can create potential hazards.

There are no hard and fast rules that could allow anyone to say whether there was a paranormal component to your experience. In light of you having recently lost a friend in a fire, it's not a surprise you'd be drawn to that possibility. Could it be a visitation? I'd say yes.
You might consider asking your late friend to give you some sign of their presence, something that would have special significance to the two of you that you'd recognize immediately.

The smell you described is not that of burned human flesh, btw.

Hello lithiumflower, welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the loss of someone close to you. These things are never easy.

As to your experience, this certainly sounds like a brief "Goodbye" type of experience. There are traditions and cultures around the word that indicate the belief that those who pass on can and do stay around for a bit to visit loved ones. However the way these "visits" manifest don't all play out the same way. Odor, like what you experienced, is common. But other times it can be a voice, or vision, a dream or simply items being moved or misplaced. What is common it that the experience ends once they know you have noticed and acknowledged them. It's not a long term, now you're being haunted kind of experience. It's more just a brief encounter to let you know they are thinking of you and are doing okay where they are.

Also, I firmly believe that not everyone is able to to manifest this strongly, or even at all, after passing. So if in the future you don't experience something similar after someone passes that's not an indicator that they didn't visit or didn't want to visit.

As to whether or not this person could ever visit again; it's impossible to say. Most stories of this nature are over shortly after they begin. The person makes their presence known and moves on. However I had an experience with someone a full year after they passed and then what seemed like that same person about 6 years after that.

Actually, I called a fire station about thirty minutes ago and asked about how a burned body would smell and they said when a whole human body burns, all the iron-rich blood still inside can give the smell a coppery, metallic component, and my loved one died in a house fire, so thus her entire body burned up. I smelled a burning smell and a metallic smell, at the same time....together....this morning....

And it's not the wiring in my place because I've been here for two years and I have never smelled it before, until today and my passed on friend/member died recently.....I don't know, maybe I'm just crazy or something, I don't know, it's....whatever

Welcome to the forum LF. I would have to agree with all the above advice. A lot of people report odors from things not present in the environment so this not rare. I often smell flowers in winter, and I assume it is a visitor of some connection. When these events occur, they are brief, sometimes just a waft of order by my nose. On the occasions it is more present others around me can smell it too. So, I do believe this can be a sign of a visitation. We all have no way of knowing anything for sure about the other side and only can make guesses from the evidence in this world. Your gut is usually right. Let me extend my sincere condolences on the loss of your friend, that is a hard way to go. If this gives you a little closure and comfort it is a good thing.

I think Duke gave you some very good things to ponder on. regardless of how long you have been there if a section of wiring goes bad it could account for that type smell and should be considered for safety reasons. and in a traumatic event or loss our brain can cause things to materialize in our other senses to make sense of things that are confusing or troubling for us at the time. sorta like a paradolia effect of how the brain makes recognizable images out of scribbles / shadows/ clouds...etc... dousnt mean your crazy, its just how you are dealing with something that youre overly focusing on or confused with at the time. you stated it was in the morning, was the stove in use or had been in use, stove "eyes" can give off a metallic burning smell as well as some toasters or other high heat items used for breakfast or cooking such as cast iron pans or pots...... we dont ask these questions because we dont believe you, we ask them to rule out any common reasons or situations that can help to understand whether it is of a paranormal source or other event. but if ones passion of " it has to be paranormal" over weighs any suggestions then it is hard to offer any reasonable help.
