He just brings a sense of groundednes to anything he is in and he's an actor of such high calibre that he can get away with understating it, even throwing away lines though most directors would be yelling at him to be more emotive or yelling 'Chew the scenery Gary, dammit, you aren't Schwarzeneggor!' but he's just a regular guy in every role and that brings much needed verisimilitude to such challenging docu-dramas as Predator 2: the New Batch, which otherwise would be disbelieved as mere fiction by less discerning viewers. As a survivor of the real life events of Predator 2 (though my name was changed for $ reasons) I do have a great respect for him for adding genuine pathos to a situation which had zero pathos. But more nachos than seen onscreen as Gary ate them all.
I don't remember where I read it, but even the SNL cast/crew thought Busey was a screwball. That's saying something considering most of them were on serious drugs at the time.
