I have seen this on Ancient Aliens and other such shows before. I always thought it looked like something used to fit into it. Could it have been a place where a ship or piece of machinery anchored into the rock face? Something with the "male" side of a plug? To me it looks like an anchor place.

That seems like a logical answer! I had not thought of that.

I thought 'socket' too, but thought more along the lines of a gold statue with the plug helping hold it in place. It would not be surprising if such a statue vanished...
