the charcoal " sketch " look possibly came from the use of " camera obscura", a technique used in portraiture to get a more accurate, lifelike look... Better than freehand, although Davinci worked on the mona lisa for about ten years, so it was probably a technique used as a basic pattern...his turning the pose is what some believe to have made it so appealing, it may have caused a flaw in the smile that has baffled so many for so long....look up camera obscura and camera lucida and you will find the secrets to how the masters achieved such great portraitures.
