Is this the end for Easter Island's moai statues?

Easter Island's famous moai statues are crumbling into the sea, forcing locals to face urgent decisions about how best to protect their heritage.

When I was a teen, I used to fantasize about visiting Easter Island. I can sympathize with their consternation about the eroding statues, but nothing can be expected to stay around forever. Including ourselves!

I always wanted to visit Easter Island as well. It's a shame the statues are starting to deteriorate. It may not be in our lifetime but, eventually another piece of history will disappear, hopefully not forgotten.
