'Meteor explosion' in Pittsburgh now confirmed by NASA

A meteor exploded in the atmosphere with a blast equivalent to 30 tons of TNT, NASA said on Monday. The sounds were heard in Pittsburgh a few minutes before 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Something like one to two dozen smallish meteors reach the earth's surface every day, most fall in uninhabited regions or at sea but sometimes they come down near people. These large ones are less common but still come in fairly regularly, once or twice a week IIRC.

I have a piece of the big meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013. That one was about the size of a school bus.
