A stretch of seabed nearly 5,000 feet long and 130 feet wide has been forced to the surface by a combination of a landslide and movements in the Earth's crust on the coast of northern Japan.
The new ribbon of land, near the town of Rausu on the east coast of Hokkaido, the most northerly of the main Japanese islands, was discovered on Friday by a local woman gathering seaweed.
