The veteran Nessie hunter gave up a lot to pursue his passion, which can be seen as dedication, though it seems more like a wasted life, to me. The technology passed him by.

I sort of feel sorry for the guy but even with known animals it's the hunt that drives hunters, not the capture or kill at the end. I used to bowhunt feral pigs without dogs and you can walk forever looking for them but then they would turn up in the weirdest spots, unexpectedly when you weren't hunting, like cryptids seem to.
I tend to agree on this. My first thought was that the monster had consumed him figuratively, but he seems happy in his state of doing nothing lol.
