A coworker and I were talking about paranormal/ghost movies and how the characters acted and what we would have done different. We came up with some senecio's that would possibly stop or at least limit the ghost/poltergeist activity. What do you think?

    1. Completely ignore the activity, if something is moved leave it or move it back, if something is broke fix it replace it or do nothing. If something extremely paranormal happens blame something else like the wind or something scientific even if it's completely nonsense.

    2. Find out what it wants. If its an object, find it and threaten to destroy it if the ghost or activity doesn't calm down. If it's a place like a house threaten to destroy the house. Basically hold whatever it want as a bargaining chip.

    3. Become crazier then the ghost. Not Ryan Reynolds in the 2005 Amityville Horror crazy but more like Joe Swanson "Family Guy" crazy, "BRING IT ON"!!!!!!! Call it names, mock it, threaten to kick it's ass.

Hello LS, because I don’t have a lot of meaningful ghost/spirit experience I don’t know what the results for each response might be. However, just like with living persons, often your response is best when it is situationally appropriate.

Plus, some living persons respond better to certain stimuli than to other stimuli. Think for example of the few common personality categories - “I’m a Type ‘A’ person...”, “He’s a functioning High D personality...”, etc. What might happen in your ghostly situation if you respond with the wrong kind of stimuli???

I agree with Wands every situation is different and has to be dealt with accordingly.

The problem with paranormal/ghost movies is they don't give a good characterization of what truly happens in those situations. Even those movies "based on actual events" are so wrong there's nothing to really judge the reality of responses.

The overwhelming fear that can be evoked from a true haunting or attack can't really be put on screen. I think until you live something like this, it would be difficult to determine what response you might actually have to the situation. I've seen people take all three approaches you mention, depending on just what the circumstances are, plus a few more. It's fun to watch those movies and get scared. Living it is a whole nuther matter.

I lived with ghost for many years, and never really thought there was anything I could do about it but just learn to get along with them, and the main thing is to not get afraid of them, I was told they were just spirits, that were just passing by while others just like to hang out, so you can have many in your house at the same time.

It would also depend on the person that they are living with, if that person feels like they are really bothering them, you can ask them to be more desecrate in their activities, so that is what I would do, just ask them not to make too much noise, and don't move your stuff around.

We had one that would call my phone every time we over slept and were running late to bring the kids to school, so I would answer the phone and no one would answer, then I would see the alarm did not go off and we would go into panic mode trying to get the kids ready for school in a record breaking time.

The most embarrassing time was when one of my daughters friends mothers was in my living room and this thing started knocking on the front door, and the lady said I had to answer the door, and I said, no its just wind, and then it knocked again and again and again with me trying to convince her it was wind, until I could see her turning white, and sickly looking, and she got really mad at me for not answering the door so I did and then it stopped knocking. She told my wife we had a ghost and the wife told her no, we have 4 or 5 of them. Last time she brought her daughter or herself to our house again.

Well I could take up another few pages but will stop here.

For some reason Debi, I’m left a little uncertain of which you think seems to evoke the greater immediate/very short term fear response - experiencing an actual haunting event or a viewing a movie representation of same?

I don't think carrying on like a pork chop is going to help any situation.I think acknowledge in your own mind it's something paranormal and just accept it,tell t to leave and don't be afraid as having an accident caused by your fear is certainly going to harm you more than most entites will, if you stay in control.

Wow that’s a lot of activity. Did your parents know the history of the place? I would have had to move or evict the ghosts.

We lived in lots of haunted properties, growing up. The scariest things I can remember, were one story told by my mother, and one actual occurrence. When my mother was a child, a schoolmate died from Scarlet Fever. The little girl's coat was given to my mother (this was during the Depression) and my mother flat out refused to wear it. So the coat was hung on her bedroom doorknob, with the intention that she wear it to school the next morning. During the night, she saw the spirit of the little girl emerge from the coat and walk down the hall.

The actual occurrence was in a house we had been living in for about six months. One night we were about to enter the kitchen, when we noticed an odd shadow on the wall. We started moving things around to change the shadow, but nothing affected it. Finally my brother noticed that the shadow was telling a story - the taller part showed a man holding a gun and the shorter part were people sitting at a table. Later we learned that a young boy had shot and killed his entire family.

In the first case, my mother vividly remembered her fear at seeing the spirit of her schoolmate leaving that coat, and the coat was later discarded. In the second case, we moved out of that house.

    Lynn,
My first experience was with an old farm house we would stay at on the week ends with my parents it was over 100 years old, and it had poltergeist, so as a kid I experienced the whole gamut of them with the moving objects, and the cold air, and musty smells, front door being found open every morning for a week, and this door had a type of sliding bolt that was jammed shut so you almost had to hit it with a hammer to open it.

The other house that I talked about , was purchased by me as an adult, but did not know that it was built on top of a grave yard when I bought it.

Basically I looked around and finally found a tv show that recommended talking to the ghost, and telling them that they are allowed to live in your house as long as there is some respect shown on both sides, that I would respect them and they had to respect me and my family, but there would be rules made by me. I think this is why they would call my phone to wake us up when the alarm didn't go off. I did not know what else to do because we tried to get them to go away and they would not, and the TV show said that in some houses you have spirits that are just passing through so if you get some to go away then you just get more.
I never got a feeling that they were bad or evil, and as a kid learned to not be afraid of them.
One showed himself to my 5 year old daughter and appeared as a Spanish knight with body armor and came towards her with an ax and swung it at her head and diapered right before he hit her, this made her cry poor thing. Ever since then she has been able to see ghost. This happened right when we moved in and after I talked to them things got better, but you have to keep talking to them to remind them, or let the new ones know the rules.
This was our approach to this issue and it seemed to make things better being that we tried praying and asking them to leave which did not work. I cannot say this would work for everyone, and if I would have gotten an evil feeling with them I would not have taken this approach, I would have called a clergy and soaked the house down with holly water, there would have been a war, it would have been them or us that would have had to leave.
