Yes, unfortunately it is toxic for dogs! Be careful that they can't get to it. I usually mix equal parts borax and confectioner's (powdered) sugar, and then I use jar lids to put a few spoonfuls in. I hide these deep in the kitchen cupboards if that is where I have seen the ants scouting around. That way there is no loose stuff lying around. We don't have dogs, but if I did, I would put the mixture up high where they couldn't get into it. This mixture usually clears ants off pretty quickly. I also keep a jar lidfull on the kitchen counter, way back in a corner. If you're worried about your dogs eating it, maybe you could make your own ant trap, something with holes in it that the ants can crawl in and out of but the dogs can't get to it.

Thanks for the info. One of the reason's I have trouble establishing authority in this house, is because my arsenal can't include poison.
