Report ranks states based on UFO sightings - Unexplained Mysteries

The National UFO Reporting Center has received countless reports of UFOs in its 45 years of operation.
With World UFO Day coming up on July 2nd, researchers have put together a list of the states that have seen the most (and fewest) sightings this year so far.

The list, which is compiled from the NUFORC's database of more than 2,000 sightings, is as follows:

Most sightings:
  1. Washington
  2. Montana
  3. Vermont
  4. Alaska
  5. Maine
Fewest sightings:
  1. Texas
  2. Louisiana
  3. Georgia
  4. Mississippi
  5. Alabama
Although it only ranks 4th this year, Alaska is home to the highest all-time number of sightings.

Conversely, despite being home to Area 51, Nevada didn't even make it in to the top 10.

Those results are seemingly counterintuitive considering the top five are states with long, cold winters where you'd expect people to spend more time indoors. The bottom five are just the opposite. On the other hand, there is probably less light pollution in the top five.

agree with duke on this, although the southern states may not be so much light pollution, they are full of paper mills and factories that contribute to "smog" type pollution. blocking the skies to some extent, and coupled with light pollution make it hard for sightings.... you would think that the more rural areas would have the highest number of sightings, it is odd though that Texas is on the bottom with the popularity, or legend of the marfa lights....guess that is not in the U.F.O grouping anymore.....
When or if you take into consideration pollution levels, area populations and a few other factors a list such as this would be very hard to have any actual meanings.

The title of the article should actually be "Report ranks states based on REPORTED SIGHTINGS to NUFORC." Considering Peter is based in Washington and gets a lot of press there for NUFORC, maybe Washington being rated #1 shouldn't be a surprise.
