Ever since Tennessee flooded in 2010 I have been stock piling reserve food in the form of both MREs and freeze dried.
I have a 2 year supply of food and water that is good until 2020.

1. Where do you get MRE's if you are not in the military?
2. Do they taste gross?

Yeah, I remember that. I have enough basics like rice, beans and soup, some canned meat, etc. I keep for long term. Also a non electric can opener and meds. After watching Katrina I kind of decided to have supplies on hand. Not for the end of the world but for interuptions of it.
