Griefbots

Okay, I'm a little torn. About 9 or 10 years ago I had an idea for a Outer Limits/ Twilight Zone style story about this very concept. Only it was going to be holograms.

A holographic projector would recreate the person's image and an AI program would recreate their voice and personality based on the person's social media footprint. I was initially going to set the story out to 2050 because the fictional technology was too far fetched, or so I thought, to be available anytime soon. So seeing my crazy scifi concept become reality is both really cool and really troubling.

I have mixed emotions. I wouldn't advise anyone not to do this if they wanted to, but I wouldn't do it. My initial thought was covered late in the video, I'd find it disappointing. I wouldn't want that disappointment to tarnish the memories of and affect my feelings toward the loved one.

I think if someone used this to save a memory, like not erasing the persons voice mail or phone recording, it would be ok. It would refresh the persons memory in your mind and heart. The problem with it is that some would try to trick themselves into believing the person was still around to talk to. There is no value in my opinion into deceiving oneself even if it is a balm to pain. I think talking to a picture would accomplish the same thing with less time and trouble.
