I've heard a lot of theories on them and I still have no idea.
I agree these reports are so strange. The one described in this story sounded more like a ghost as it started like a mist and then formed. The ones that get me are the accounts of something similar to the monsters in the movie "Predator". They appear shimmery and see through, but the shape and movement are detectable. It is like they are cloaked but the disguise doesn't quite match the background. I am having trouble describing it. These accounts are troubling because it appears there is an entity that can move about in our world pretty much at will, without being seen for the most part.

I've often wondered if these are the source for legends about things like Elementals or possibly Djinn. The idea that these types of entities might be described as mist, smoke or a heat mirage to anyone who might have seen one in centuries past before we had the Predator movie for refrence.
The one I saw was much more subtle in appearance than the Predator movie. Here is a recap video of a Star Trek episode that shows something a lot closer to how the one that came to me looked, just go to about the 5:14 time stamp.

I think both you and Oz are correct. I also believe these are entities that have always been here. I follow a lot of the myths and history of the paranormal, including holy books and ancient writings, and I believe these to have been with us all along. I don't let semantics get in the way. Name them what you will, but yup! They are here.
